Douglas Engelbart, inventor of the computer mouse, has died - lopezfrompont1970

Little Giant Engelbart, a Silicon Vale engineer who invented the computing machine mouse and is credited with many of the concepts that support modern calculation and the Net, died on Tuesday at his range in Atherton, California. He was 88.

Natural in 1925, Engelbart was approach of age as World War 2 raged in Europe. He linked the U.S. Navy as an electronic and radiolocation technician, and after the war studied electric engineering at Oregon State University. He went connected to complete a master's degree and Ph.D. at the University of California at Berkeley, where he was also an assistant professor.

About a year later, in 1957, he joined the Stanford Research Institute (today titled SRI International), which was righteous over a decade erstwhile. From 1959 until 1977 He led the arrangement's Augmentation Research Center, and in 1963 came upfield with the concept of the mouse.

The mouse would go on to revolutionize personal computing, but the public didn't get their first look at it until several long time later o.

In a demonstration at the Fall Joint Computer Conference in San Francisco on Declination. 9, 1968, he introduced the concepts of hypertext linking, real-time text redaction, the use of multiple windows, and teleconferencing. Atomic number 2 besides showed a set of three devices that worked collectively to control a data processor.

"We have a pointing device called a pussyfoot, a standard keyboard and a special key coiffur," he told the audience. The demonstration can be seen in archive footage on YouTube.

In a world of central processing unit computers controlled by keyboards, the sneak out was a new idea.

"I don't lie with why we call it a mouse. Sometimes I justify. It started that way and we never did change it," helium said, explaining the refer to his interview.

A year after, the Augmentation Enquiry Center underscored its importance in computing away becoming the back node of the ARPANET, the predecessor to nowadays's Internet.

"Doug was a giant who made the world a some better place and World Health Organization profoundly touched those of us who knew him," Curtis Carlson, chair and CEO of SRI, said in a statement. "SRI was very privileged and honored to have him arsenic one of our 'household.' He brought tremendous evaluate to society. We will miss his genius, warmness and charm. Doug's legacy is immense—anyone in the world who uses a mouse or enjoys the productive benefits of a microcomputer is indebted to him."

Engelbart received numerous awards for this work through the latter years of his lifespan. They included the Nationalistic Medal of Technology in 2000, the Lemelson-Massachusetts Institute of Technology Prize in 1997 and the Turing Honour, also in 1997.
